Het Zwin has a long history that goes back to the Middle Ages. The area was created around the 12th century by a series of storm surges that penetrated the land and formed a natural channel. Ships from all over the world found their way to Bruges via Het Zwin, which made the area play a major role in the economic development of the region.

The polders between Oostburg and Cadzand-Bad form a unique and varied landscape. The polders are a characteristic part of the Zeeland landscape and fall under the ‘old land polder’ type.
