Oostkapelle, Kamperland

Oostkapelle, the name says it all: there must have been a chapel here in the past. Just like in Westkapelle by the way. But where Westkapelle developed, Oostkapelle remained a farming village for a long time. Only in the twentieth century did Oostkapelle develop into a seaside resort. The Saint Felix Flood and the All Saints Flood washed away the town of Campen. After diking, Kamperland was the last place to be rebuilt on the site of the former Campen.

Veere is a beautiful historic fishing town with nice shops and a museum. From Veere you can cross the Veerse Meer by ferry to Kamperland with Rondje Pontje (or vice versa).

Rondje Pontje sails from May 1 to the last weekend of September on Tuesday to Sunday. In July and August there is sailing every day. Do you cycle the route when the ferry is not sailing? Then instead of taking the ferry, you can cycle the route as a figure-eight. To do this, return to button from Veere (no. 36). 32-31-30-03-02-01 (or the other way around as seen from Kamperland) and continue cycling the route as mentioned.

Strawberry Island must not have gotten its name for nothing. But we don’t know whether strawberries can actually be found there, because there is no ferry to get there. Yet you will be treated during this route, because you can fully enjoy the beautiful Zeeland landscapes and waters. You will also pass through beautiful places. Take Veere for example: a monumental town where the Scots used to have an important role, thanks to the marriage of Wolfert VI van Borsele with the Scottish princess Mary Stuart.

Vrouwenpolder owes its name to the chapel that was built in honor of Mary. Kamperland, formerly Campen, was probably important in Noord-Beveland in the past. Veere was called Kampvere, the place where the ferry to Campen left. Kortgene finally burned down in 1423, but eight years later the place name was mentioned again. Kortgene is the only place on Noord-Beveland that has city rights, although it was not given a seat in the States of Zeeland.

* NB! During the route you will come across a bicycle ferry (between junctions 24 and 25) to sail from North to South Beveland. This ferry only sails in July and August on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday (2024). Check the ferry service’s website to see if the ferry is operating.

* If the ferry is not running, you can:
– Cycle from junction 24 to 34 (or vice versa from the other direction).
– Do you still want to cycle the entire route? Then cycle at junction 34 via the bridge to Zuid-Beveland and complete the round via junctions: 35-60-58-51-50-25-35-34 and continue the route via 24 or 33.
