During this cycle route you will travel to the edge of the disaster area on the hard-hit Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland. A large part of the island has been wiped out, except for the Kop van Schouwen. During the rising tide on February 1, 1953, farmers try to chase their cows, sheep and pigs into the dunes here, on higher land.

Zierikzee, Burgh-Haamstede

Zierikzee is considered the heart of Schouwen-Duiveland and is the starting point of this route. The port city didn’t have it easy. In addition to the constant threat of water, residents had to contend with five city fires during World War I, a siege by Flemish troops, beggars and Spanish soldiers, and then a bombing raid by a British pilot. But the Zeeland motto “Luctor et Emergo” also applies to Zierikzee: the city has completely recovered.

With a head full of interesting facts, you cycle along the south coast of the island of Zeeland back to Zierikzee. On the way you can stop every now and then and enjoy a sight or the beautiful view of the vast nature of the Oosterschelde National Park.

Burgh-Haamstede, Renesse, Noordwelle

Slot Haamstede is een afwisselend natuurgebied. Naast het mooie kasteel is er ook een prachtig slotbos en ook de aangrenzende Zeepeduinen zijn niet te versmaden. In het gebied loopt ook een kudde Shetlandpony’s die twee keer per jaar bijeengedreven worden voor de verzorging van hun hoeven, maar voor de rest hebben deze rustige dieren vrij spel in het gebied. Door hun hoeven zorgen ze ervoor dat stukken zand niet begroeid worden, waardoor zandkevers en zandbijen hier goed kunnen leven, en helm en zeegras de kans krijgt om te groeien. De zuidkust van Schouwen biedt opnieuw ruimte aan de natuur zoals die vroeger was. Onder andere de tureluur is hier altijd te vinden, evenals de zilverplevier, wulp, rosse grutto, bonte strandloper en kanoet. Stap dus gerust eens af om te genieten van de vogelrijkdom!
