The beaches of South Holland are mainly known for their wide beaches and interesting nightlife. But Goeree also has a lot to offer for nature lovers. The Volgerland for example, where many bird species have found a place to nest, rest or forage.

The dunes of Goeree form one of the largest contiguous dune landscapes in South Holland. The Springert dunes are very quiet, so you can easily come across a stoat, roe deer or hare; the Westhoofdvallei offers space for plants such as the harlequin, the adrenal tongue and the flesh-coloured orchid; in the Middle and East dunes the redstart, nightingale and hedge sparrow fly and in the Kwade Hoek a harrier can easily soar above your head. For more birds such as the bearded tit and the bluethroat you should go to the Scheelhoek, or look for the many duck species on the Kop van Goeree.

During your route you will pass the port of Stellendam, a lively place where fishing boats sail in and out and you can enjoy the salty sea air. Over the Haringvlietdam, with a breathtaking view, cycle towards the Fortress of Hellevoetsluis, a historic place that used to serve as a naval base. The fortress consists of various buildings and forts, feast your eyes as you imagine what it must have been like here in the past.

After a visit to the Fortress of Hellevoetsluis, you cycle back over the dam towards Ouddorp. The Haringvlietdam is more than just a dam. This dam contains a road and large locks and therefore serves as important protection against the water. After the dam you cycle along the coast and we come close to National Park Kwade Hoek, among other places. This park is a real must-see and is especially known for its rugged dunes, rough vegetation and beautiful beaches. You can walk, cycle or just enjoy the view over the sea for hours. When you stand here, it feels like you are at the end of the world. You can spot many different birds here and with a bit of luck you can even see a seal swimming or sunbathing.
